Wabash National Delivers 100th Composite Reefer Unit

COMMENTS:

LAFAYETTE, Ind. – January 29, 2019 – Wabash National Corporation (NYSE: WNC), a leading producer of truck bodies, semi-trailers and liquid transportation equipment, has delivered its 100th Cold Chain refrigerated truck body with the company’s proprietary molded structural composite (MSC) technology.

Wabash National’s Cold Chain truck bodies with MSC technology have been hitting the road with pilot customers since the company introduced the new product in October 2015. In April 2017, Wabash National opened a facility in Little Falls, Minnesota, for the production of MSC panels for refrigerated truck bodies and 53’ trailers.

“Customers’ interest in our Cold Chain refrigerated truck body with MSC has continued to increase,” said Mike Pettit, group president of Wabash National’s Final Mile Products business, which includes the Wabash and Supreme brand products for final mile delivery. “We’re thrilled with the positive response from customers who see the value in our new material technology that performs better than the conventional materials.”

Exterior of the 100th Wabash National Composite Reefer Unit

The 100th MSC truck body was delivered to longtime Wabash National dealer Stoops Freightliner-Quality Trailer for one of the world’s largest fleets for cold product delivery to wholesalers, hospitals, clinics and retailers.

“Customers are impressed with the appearance of the Wabash truck body with MSC, and the weight savings and thermal benefits of the MSC body are both big factors for my customers,” said Nathan Meyer, Expediter Sales at Stoops. “The encapsulated foam insulation is the most efficient out there in the market and also offers a longer life than traditional methods of insulation. This is also the only body in production that has a standard floor rated for fork lifts. I think that speaks to the durability. The MSC body is designed and built to stand up to all my customers’ needs.”

Ranked as a Heavy Duty Trucking Top 20 Product in 2016, the Wabash Cold Chain Series refrigerated truck body introduces true innovation to the final mile. Featuring the company’s patent-pending MSC technology, thermal efficiency is improved by up to 25 percent over conventional designs, while weight is reduced by as much as 15 percent. That's taking performance to new heights, all while realizing greater abrasion and impact resistance to extend truck body life.

“Our customers rely on us to provide them products that outperform the market and reduce operating costs,” said Mickey McKee, vice president of sales, Final Mile Products. “Cold Chain truck bodies are more thermally efficient, lighter and stronger than anything else in the market. All those add up to benefits for our customer base.”

“Wabash has a great legacy of developing innovative products that change the trailer market,” added Tim Marling, vice president of new product and business development, Final Mile Products. “We think Cold Chain, with its proprietary design and components, will do the same for the refrigerated truck body market.”

Kenworth T680s Answer the Call of Duty for USA Truck

January 24, 2019

POST AUTHOR:
COMMENTS:

VAN BUREN, Ark., January 24, 2019 – When soldiers go into battle, they rely on their training, experience and equipment to keep them safe and enable them to complete their mission. When the troops from USA Truck roll out, they depend on the Kenworth T680 to keep routes on schedule and their crew of drivers, more than a quarter of which are former military personnel, productive and satisfied with their jobs.

That commitment to duty and service is the foundation of USA Truck Capacity Solutions, started in 1983 by Robert Powell, a former Navy aviator, as Crawford Produce, operating fewer than 10 trucks. Today, with more than 1,600 driving team members, USAT is regarded as one of the nation’s largest over-the-road truckload carriers.

USAT prides itself on being the ‘go to’ provider when customers face challenges in their supply chain. Recognized by the iconic U.S. Air Force star and bars insignia on their doors, USAT provides customized truckload, dedicated contract carriage, intermodal and third-party logistics freight management services to a wide customer base throughout North America.

USA Truck Kenworth T680s

The Kenworth T680 makes up more than half of the USAT fleet. Since early 2016, the USA Truck division has acquired 625 T680s with 76-inch sleepers through MHC Kenworth - Van Buren.

“Having a reliable truck on the road is very important to our operation. From the standpoint of servicing our customers, it gives us confidence that we're going to be able to handle capacity and meet commitments,” said David Turner, USAT corporate marketing manager. “When you’re on the road, you can’t have your truck break down when you're delivering a load.”

“Kenworth is a key nameplate that drivers gravitate towards,” said Nick Wakefield, director of driver recruiting. “Especially with the Kenworth T680, drivers like the configuration of the cab and how much space it offers. Regardless of a driver’s height, the T680 has a roomy feel and handles exceptionally well. It’s also a truck that drivers think looks cool.

“We pay by the mile,” Wakefield added, “so having dependable trucks helps in recruiting because drivers know they'll be getting a steady paycheck.”

When USAT chooses equipment for its 2,000-tractor fleet, the company looks at a number of factors with build quality and safety (for drivers) being at the top. Overall total cost of ownership is another. Jeff Harris, USAT vice president of maintenance, has been in the trucking industry 30 years, and has a lot of respect for Kenworth and PACCAR products.

USA Truck Kenworth T680s

“The T680 has a good running history. We’re confident we can get at least a good four years out of them without incurring stepped-up cost-per-mile increases,” Harris said.

Fuel economy is always important to the carrier's bottom line. While the actual numbers are in the "top secret file" at USAT headquarters, they do note that the new Kenworth T680s with 76-inch sleepers, when matched with a 400-hp engine and automated transmission, represents a significant improvement compared to the previous model the company operated.

In terms of added features, USAT specs air-disc brakes to achieve maximum stopping power and reduce its stopping distance. The company also incorporated the Bendix® Wingman® Fusion™ collision mitigation system with adaptive cruise control, and Bendix BlindSpotter™, a radar-based, side sensor designed to help drivers be aware of obstacles that may be hidden in the blind spots on either side of their truck.

The latest order of Kenworth T680s marked USAT's first with an automated transmission. “You really restrict yourself today if you don't have automated transmissions in your fleet because many of the new drivers are certified only for those transmissions,” Harris said.

Wakefield pointed out that the automated transmissions are particularly accommodating for drivers coming out of the military who are used to operating simplified Class-B level equipment. “Having a top-of-the-line truck like the Kenworth T680, designed around ease of operation and driver-friendliness, makes for a smooth transition,” he said.

“Out of the gate, a lot of drivers claim they don't like automated transmissions,” Harris remarked, “but after they’ve been driving an automated transmission for a short while, they love it.”

USA Truck Kenworth T680s

USAT has a long, proud history of supporting our nation’s heroes, and does all it can to show its appreciation for their service. Four of USAT's veteran drivers, each representing a different branch of the military, were awarded military-themed tractors with custom camo wraps and the slogan “Serve, Unite, Advance.”

“When veterans enter into the civilian workforce, they look for opportunities like they had in the military where there was a rally point with a community of like-minded individuals. We want USA Truck to be a rally point,” said Steve Brantley, USAT director of talent acquisition.

In 2017, USAT was recognized among “Most Valuable Employers for Military” by RecruitMilitary, which identifies top civilian employers for military-experienced job seekers.

“We love veterans from a recruiting standpoint because they're resourceful and adapt well to facing challenges and overcoming obstacles,” Brantley said. “The veterans are trained to rely on their equipment, and the beauty of the T680 is that it is reliable and helps them to transition from taking orders to being the captain of their own ship."

Mack mDRIVE HD Debuts in TerraPro Concrete Pumper

January 22, 2019

POST AUTHOR:
COMMENTS:

LAS VEGAS – (Jan. 22, 2019) – Mack Trucks will offer the Mack® mDRIVE™ HD automated manual transmission (AMT) in Mack TerraPro® concrete pumper models beginning in 2019, marking the first time in the industry that an AMT has been available in a cabover concrete pumper. The fully integrated 13- and 14-speed mDRIVE HD AMTs give concrete pumper customers improved performance, proven durability and maximized uptime in an easy-to-operate package. Mack made the announcement at World of Concrete 2019 in Las Vegas.

“The mDRIVE HD is the only AMT available with split-shaft PTO functionality, which enables us to offer concrete pumper customers all the benefits of the mDRIVE HD and our fully integrated powertrain,” said John Walsh, vice president of marketing for Mack Trucks. “In addition to improved performance and productivity, the mDRIVE HD helps increase jobsite safety. Eliminating traditional shifting allows drivers to focus on safely operating their equipment.”

All Mack mDRIVE HD AMTs come standard with split-shaft PTO functionality. Instead of taking power from a transmission- or engine-mounted PTO, split-shaft PTOs receive output directly from the transmission, supplying higher torque for large auxiliary equipment including concrete pumps.

The Mack mDRIVE HD is fully integrated with Mack’s legendary engines and axles, providing additional performance and efficiency benefits for customers. In TerraPro concrete pumpers, the mDRIVE HD will be paired exclusively with the 11-liter Mack MP®7 engine, and will be available with higher horsepower and torque ratings than equivalent models with conventional automatic transmissions. That includes the MP7’s top rating of 425 horsepower and 1,560 lb.-ft. of torque, which packs 13-liter power in an 11-liter engine. The mDRIVE HD for TerraPro concrete pumper models is available as a 13-speed direct drive or overdrive, as well as a 14-speed direct drive.

“For more than 100 years, Mack has held firm to the belief that components designed work together simply work better,” said Tim Wrinkle, Mack construction product manager. “Not only do our integrated components deliver higher performance, they also help maximize uptime for our customers.”

Like all Mack mDRIVE AMTs, the mDRIVE HD in TerraPro concrete pumper customers will be monitored by Mack’s GuardDog® Connect telematics solution. GuardDog Connect, which comes standard on all Mack models powered by Mack engines, provides proactive monitoring and repair planning, real-time diagnosis of issues, repair scheduling and confirmation that needed parts are in stock and ready to install. Together with Mack ASIST and Mack’s OneCall™ uptime experts, GuardDog Connect delivers decision-critical information to maximize customer uptime.

The mDRIVE HD offers customers simplified maintenance compared to conventional automatic transmissions, with service intervals of up to 500,000 miles. If the mDRIVE HD does require service, customers can simply visit any authorized Mack dealer, eliminating the additional time and hassle of visiting a third party service location.

Mack’s mDRIVE HD is based on the proven design of the mDRIVE, which has been standard in Mack highway models since 2014. With ruggedized internal components, including stronger gears and synchros, the mDRIVE HD is built to withstand the frequent shifting often found in construction applications. The 13- and 14-speed variants also feature low-ratio creeper gears, enabling the mDRIVE HD improved startability and ultra-low speed maneuverability.

All mDRIVE HD AMTs feature a transmission-mounted oil cooler to help maintain optimal operating temperatures, even in the face of repeated, heat-generating shifts commonly found at jobsites. The mDRIVE HD also includes advanced standard features like Rock Free, which allows drivers to free stuck vehicles by rocking the truck back and forth simply by pumping the accelerator, and Auto Neutral, which improves jobsite safety by automatically putting the mDRIVE into neutral when the parking brake is set. Additional features like Grade Gripper, which helps prevent rolling backward on an incline, are also included, as well as MaxBrake, Performance Mode and more.

The Mack mDRIVE HD in Mack TerraPro concrete pumper models will be available for order in February 2019. For more information, visit Mack Trucks at World of Concrete 2019 in booth C5103.

New Enhancements to the Western Star 4700 Benefit Driver

January 22, 2019

POST AUTHOR:
COMMENTS:

LAS VEGAS – Jan. 22, 2019 – Western Star’s most popular truck model has been updated with several new enhancements that make it lighter, safer, more productive and faster to upfit. The enhanced 4700 is on display for the first time at World of Concrete 2019 in booth #C5675.

“Since introducing the 4700 in 2011, customer acceptance has continued to exceed expectations,” said Samantha Parlier, vice president of marketing and product strategy for Western Star. “We know customers already appreciate the truck’s versatility and dependability, and our newest features will deliver at an even higher level.”

New Cummins Engine, More Powertrain Options, Easier Upfitting for Body Builders

“The 4700 has always been all about providing customers with the choices that are best matched for their exact business needs,” said Parlier. “Our new powertrain options expand the adaptability of the already versatile 4700.”

4700 trucks and tractors can now be spec’d with the new Cummins X12 engine. This ultra-lightweight engine increases payload capacity, which boosts profitability for vocational customers. Weighing 2,050 pounds – which is up to 600 lbs. lighter than other medium-bore engines in the 10 to 13-liter category – the Cummins X12 contributes to enhanced productivity without compromising the power required for tough vocational jobs. And, front- and rear-engine PTO offerings enable more upfitting options, a benefit to both customers and body builders.

The Cummins X12 engine, which delivers up to 1700 lb.-ft. of torque and 500HP, has a low-friction design that is well-suited for higher MPGs. It is compatible with a broad range of fully automatic, automated manual and manual transmissions, and has oil drain, filter and fuel filter replacement intervals that rival comparable engines.

Another new option is the Detroit™ DT12™ automated manual transmission, which can now be spec’d for Detroit-powered 4700s. With features such as creep mode, hill start aid and a precise pneumatic shift and clutch control, the DT12 gives a smoother ride and reduces driver fatigue.

Western Star 4700

The enhanced 4700 also has additional upfit-friendly improvements, including updates to the electrical system – such as the addition of a third Power Distribution Module – and improved interface connections on the back floor of the cab, as well as four new options for trailer connections.

“The 4700 is a workhorse, and our customers want it to get on the job as fast as possible. That’s why we made the 4700 easier for body builders to upfit,” said Parlier.

Refreshed Interior, Western Star Style

Renowned for its interiors, the inside of the 4700 has been refreshed to help drivers stay focused on the road and more productive throughout the day.

Western Star 4700 interior

Larger gauges on the instrument panel provide improved visibility, and a new LCD dash display delivers more information to the driver in an intuitive format. Four customizable LED indicators are available for body builders to keep the operator informed of various truck functions, data and alerts.

The truck’s multi-function steering wheel offers the driver easy-to-reach access to cruise control, radio functions, phone controls and dash display menus.

“We worked directly with customers to create an environment that drivers can customize to best meet the needs of their specific job and lifestyle,” noted Parlier. “From dash-mounted USB ports for personal mobile devices, to a variety of mounting and pre-wire options for telematics systems, the 4700 is easier than ever to operate.”

For the first time, the 4700 can now be spec’d with a 40-inch low or ultra-low roof StarLight sleeper. This additional space can be used for extra storage or fitted with a comfortable mattress.

Packed with Safety Features

Several new features will keep drivers and others on the road safer. Wabco OnGuard uses a bumper-mounted radar unit to track vehicles and objects in the truck’s path, and then automatically applies the brake if the driver doesn’t slow the truck in time. Bendix lane departure camera tracks the truck’s lane position and provides audible warnings to the driver.

Added Parlier: “We’re proud that the 4700 has been an ever-growing number of customers’ choice for eight years, and we know that our new enhancements will make their experience even better and more profitable.”

“Everyday Heroes” Kenworth T680 makes trip to Washington, D.C.

January 21, 2019

POST AUTHOR:
COMMENTS:

WASHINGTON, D.C., Jan. 21, 2019 – In coordination with National Human Trafficking Awareness month, Truckers Against Trafficking (TAT) unveiled its 2019 Everyday Heroes Kenworth T680, at a press conference held recently at the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

On a brisk and snow-covered day in Washington, 50 members of the national media and sponsors of the Everyday Heroes Kenworth T680 turned out for a chance to listen to speakers, get a first-hand look at the special TAT Kenworth T680, and take a look inside the Freedom Drivers Project, a mobile display featuring a video and artifacts from human trafficking survivors.

Everyday Heros 2019 Kenworth T680

Featured speakers explained the importance of stopping human trafficking and the need to continue to raise awareness about the crime. The speakers included Kendis Paris, Truckers Against Trafficking executive director and co-founder; Kevin Baney, Kenworth assistant general manager of sales and marketing; Don Blake, new truck sales manager, Inland Kenworth – Phoenix; U.S. Rep. Andy Biggs (Arizona); Karl Racine, District of Columbia attorney general; and John McKown, UPS driver and TAT ambassador.

“The press conference was held to help raise awareness for human trafficking, and we accomplished that goal through our Everyday Heroes Kenworth T680 and the Freedom Drivers Project,” said Inland Kenworth’s Don Blake, who serves as a TAT board member. “There was even a local driver who passed by and decided to pull his rig over to check out our special truck. He was inspired after learning about the program, and wants to become TAT trained and to encourage others at his company to do so as well.”

Those in attendance had the opportunity to look through the Freedom Drivers Project. “One woman told me that the Freedom Drivers Project was incredible, but the only thing missing was a box of tissues,” said Blake. “As sad as it is to walk through the exhibit, it really does portray how terrible the crime of human trafficking is today. Hopefully, with the help of TAT trained members, we may one day bring an end to this crime.”

Fighting human trafficking takes money to fund, and that is why the 2019 Everyday Heroes truck was built – as a fundraiser to offset TAT program costs. The Kenworth T680, valued at $162,000 will be auctioned off live on Ritchie Bros., site in Phoenix on May 17.

“Human trafficking is one of the greatest human rights violations of our time and it is going to take every sector, both public and private, and every individual no matter their profession, playing a role in helping to bring freedom,” said Paris. “This Everyday Heroes truck stands as a symbol that the American trucking industry is dedicated to doing just that.”

According to TAT, 2,250 calls have been made to the national hotline by truckers which have helped identify over 1,100 victims of human trafficking, many of whom are kids.

“At the office of attorney general, we see kids every day and sadly we see kids who are victims of human trafficking,” said Racine. “One of the earlier speakers spoke of the need to curtail trafficking by ending demand. The only way we can do that is if we enlist more eyes and ears on the roads, at the hotel, and at the transportation sites throughout this country.”

Everyday Heros 2019 Kenworth T680

The unveiling of the Everyday Heroes trucks kicks off a four-month tour with stops at Kenworth’s Chillicothe, Ohio, plant (Feb. 21-22), the TMC Annual Meeting in Atlanta (March 18-21), and the Mid-America Trucking show in Louisville (March 28-30), before making its final stop at Richie Bros.

The special Kenworth T680 is fully loaded with a 76-inch sleeper, 485-hp PACCAR MX-13 engine, and PACCAR 12-speed automated transmission.

“Kenworth is honored to be involved in the auction to help maximize the value, create demand and generate top dollar for the Everyday Heroes truck to benefit this worthy cause,” said Baney. “Helping drivers understand human trafficking and knowing what they can do to help is an extension of our message, and it’s an essential part of our mission to make this a better world.”

To make the Everyday Heroes Kenworth T680 truck possible, sponsors at the platinum, gold, silver and bronze levels donated parts and money to help in the manufacturing process.

Providing support for the truck are Platinum Level: Kenworth Truck Company, Inland Kenworth and Ritchie Bros; Gold Level: PACCAR Engine, SEG Automotive, and Swift Charities; Silver Level: Bendix, Bridgestone, Eaton, FlowBelow, Horton, Jost, Meritor, PACCAR Financial, PACCAR Parts, Utility Trailer Sales of Arizona, Trimble, and WABCO; and Bronze Level: Alcoa, Arizona Rock Product Association, Arizona Trucking Association, Beaver Stripes and Molding, Chevron, ConMet, Davco, East Penn, Ex-Guard®, National Seats, PrePass / Help Inc, Sheppard, and Tectran.

Since its founding in 2009, over 680,000 people have become TAT educated and trained. With over 3.5 million truck drivers in the U.S. alone, drivers are considered the eyes and ears of the road. Drivers like John McKown, who is TAT trained and a driver for UPS, is one of those drivers looking to make a difference.

“I’m a fighter against human trafficking. This is where it gets tough because I'm a dad, a grandpa, an uncle, and a great uncle. But, more importantly, I'm in this fight to bring awareness to this horrible crime and someday, somehow make a difference in someone’s life,” said McKown.

The Everyday Heroes Kenworth T680 is designed to raise awareness for human trafficking, and encourage other drivers on the road to report suspicious activity to the National Human Trafficking Hotline (1-888-3737-888).

Minimizer releases Floor Mats for new Volvo trucks

January 21, 2019

POST AUTHOR:
COMMENTS:

(Blooming Prairie, MN January 21, 2019) – With Volvo’s updated line of trucks hitting the roads and highways of North America, Minimizer has released Custom Molded Floor Mats that fit each of those models.

The new versions of the VNL, VNR, VNX, and VHD are now covered by the lifetime warranty offered by Minimizer.

“We have never manufactured Floor Mats for the VNR, VNX, or VHD, so this is exciting news,” Minimizer Technical Manager Gordon Eby said. “And while we do offer Floor Mats for the older VNL, the update made it necessary to introduce an entirely new kit.”

“We think Volvo owners will find these new Floor Mats offer the same durability and value they’ve come to expect from Minimizer,” Minimizer Director of Marketing Steve Hansen said.

Minimizer Floor Mats utilize a tray system, meaning the cab floor is protected by the mat’s raised edge. Whatever falls on the mat – such as dirt from a driver’s boots or coffee from a driver’s cup – stays on the mat.

“Floor Mats have become one of our most popular products, and we intend to keep up with demand by continuing to release new kits whenever the need arises,” Hansen said.

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev., Jan. 17, 2019 – Kenworth Sales Company recently broke ground on a new North Las Vegas, Nev., location at 4450 Donovan Way. It will replace the current facility on 3033 Losee Drive. The 65,000 square-foot facility will include 27 service bays, expanded parts inventory, new and used truck sales, as well truck rental and leasing. Seventy-five employees will be at this location, creating about 20 new opportunities.

“We are excited to have Kenworth here. Trucking is the lifeblood of this town. We live in the desert and without trucks we would have nothing,” said North Las Vegas Mayor John Lee, who was on site for the groundbreaking.

“This new store will allow us to better facilitate the needs of our customer base in the Las Vegas area,” said District Manager Lynn Cusey of Kenworth Sales Company. “Kenworth has been servicing this area for many years. We are always looking for ways to better serve our customers and look forward to enhancing customer experience with this new, state of the art location.”

Boyd Martin Construction is heading up the project with the help of a number of local subcontractors. Kimley-Horn is the local engineer, while the design is by NBW Architects. Financing is provided by Zions Bank.

“It is important to us to use local businesses in this project,” stated Kenworth Sales Company President Kyle Treadway. “We want to support and work with our neighbors in an effort to be good contributors to the community today and moving forward.”

GREENSBORO, NC (Jan. 14, 2019) – Mack Trucks is continuing its support of the Concrete Industry Management (CIM) program with the donation of a 2019 Mack® Granite® model to the CIM Auction. Proceeds from the auction, which will be Wednesday, Jan. 23 during World of Concrete 2019, will benefit the CIM program’s mission to develop the next generation of leaders within the concrete industry.

The Granite model will go up for bid during the live portion of the auction, which begins at 1 p.m. PST in North Hall Room N262 of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Prospective bidders at World of Concrete can register on-site, while those unable to attend in person can bid online through the CIM Auction website hosted by Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers. To participate in electronic auction bidding, bidders must register a week in advance.

“As a leader in the construction market, Mack understands the hard work required to succeed in today’s ultra-competitive world,” said Tim Wrinkle, Mack construction product manager. “That’s why Mack is proud to support the CIM program and their efforts to develop future leaders and teach them the necessary skills to be successful within the concrete industry.”

Mack Trucks donated a 2019 Mack® Granite® model to the Concrete Industry Management (CIM) Auction, which will be Wednesday, Jan. 23 during World of Concrete 2019

Spec’d as an axle forward, boost-a-load mixer, the donated Mack Granite model is powered by a 395-horsepower Mack MP®7-395C engine, which also delivers 1,560 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine is mated to a 14-speed Mack mDRIVE™ HD with ultra-low ratio creeper gears, as well as Mack front and rear axles. The Granite model features an 11-cubic-yard Interstate Class VORTEX paving mixer, generously donated by Beck Industrial.

"Mack Trucks has stepped up once again with a significant donation in support of CIM,” said CIM Auction Committee Chairman Mike Philipps. “This truck will not only help ensure a successful auction, but will enable us to continue providing an outstanding education to future leaders within our industry.”

A four-year degree program, CIM focuses on developing the in-depth business, technical and communication skills required for success in today’s concrete industry. Approximately 500 students are currently enrolled in the program, which is offered at four institutions: Middle Tennessee State University, the New Jersey Institute of Technology, California State University – Chico and Texas State University.

In 2018, bidders helped CIM raise more than $1.1 million in gross revenue through its silent and live auctions, thanks to the generous contributions and support of the concrete industry. Mack Trucks has participated in the CIM Auction with a truck donation for several years.
