(Blooming Prairie MN July 31, 2018) – When the dust settled – and there was a lot of dust – the Minimizer Bandit Big Rig Series did what it set out to do, which is entertain a legion of fans and leave them with a lifetime of memories.

An unforgettable weekend of back-to-back events was met with a chorus of cheers, countless oohs and ahs, and some new fans for life.

"If rubbing is racing, we definitely had some good racing going on this weekend!" Bandit Race Director Brian Madsen said. "The boys were feeling a little chippy and weren't cutting anyone any slack."

It all started at La Crosse Speedway in Wisconsin Saturday night, where rookie Mike Ward (#16) drove like a man possessed.

"It's been a long time since I've been in victory lane," Ward said.

Ward led every lap of the feature race and stole the checkered flag as well as a $10,000 check.

"Even though Ward led every lap, he had his hands full with his truck being on old tires," Madsen said.

"The last ten laps, the tires were done. There was no traction and I was just trying to save my right front (tire), but it worked out," Ward said.

Jon Lisenbee (#7) and Justin Ball (#17) finished two-three in La Crosse, and the very next day Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Iowa, Ball was declared the winner after rain put an end to the feature mid-race.

"It feels unbelievable," Ball said after capturing his second Bandit feature race in three events. "The last time we were here, (the track) felt like it was fast and we just tried to keep that going."

Ball has jumped up in the standings, thanks to an impressive run that started with a feature win in Salem, Indiana. The man they call ‘Boost' is now in fourth, while Ricky Rude (#17) remains on top as the Bandits get ready to run Hickory Motor Speedway Saturday, August 11th .

"It's going to be exciting," Bandit General Manager Jason Johnson said. "The World's Most Famous Short Track is a legend where many racing superstars got their start. We can't wait to get back there."

NorCal Kenworth Uses TruckTech+ To Cut Shop Time

July 26, 2018

POST AUTHOR:
COMMENTS:

SAN LEANDRO, Calif., July 27, 2018 – Whenever a Kenworth T680 or T880 equipped with Kenworth TruckTech+® Remote Diagnostics arrives at the NorCal Kenworth – San Leandro requiring service, the dealership’s branch manager Josh Hayes and his team are ready.

In many cases, they already know where to start the repairs and what parts they’ll need to resolve the issue. As a result, chances are good it will spend less time in the NorCal Kenworth dealership’s shop than it otherwise would have.

Veritable Vegetable Kenworth T680

“With the improved tracking of the truck, and steps in the service event and communication with the truck fleet that Kenworth TruckTech+ Service Management* can offer, we have found it can cut the time a unit is in our shop by 30 percent,” Hayes explained. “We’ve also found that among trucks with TruckTech+ Remote Diagnostics, we’re seeing about a 15 percent reduction in the number of those trucks that must be towed in. That’s because remote diagnostics allows us to monitor fault codes and remotely diagnose issues to determine if a truck can be driven into the shop or if it should be towed in.

“We can also determine where the truck is and when it’s due to arrive. That allows us to plan and be ready for the truck so that our team can hit the ground running when it arrives,” Hayes added. “I can rearrange schedules when necessary to be sure that certain technicians with specific skills or expertise are available to look at the truck and initiate repairs as soon as possible. TruckTech+ helps drive up our shop efficiency, which gives us the ability to get our customers’ trucks back on the road faster.”

Veritable Vegetable fleet director Tom Howard appreciates the rapid response from his company’s local Kenworth dealer and from other Kenworth dealers throughout the West, made possible in part by TruckTech+. Kenworth TruckTech+ Remote Diagnostics continuously transmits vehicle diagnostics from Veritable Vegetable’s fleet of Kenworth T680s round the clock to NorCal Kenworth – San Leandro, which is a Kenworth PremierCare® Gold Certified dealership, and to other dealers in the Kenworth dealer network along the vehicles’ routes.

Anytime sensors on board T680s or T880s detect issues that require servicing, Kenworth TruckTech+ Remote Diagnostics transmits email alerts with detailed information that Howard can view on his smartphone. The email alerts, which are also sent to NorCal Kenworth, include links to the PACCAR Solutions web portal.

Veritable Vegetable Kenworth T680

In the PACCAR Solutions Remote Diagnostics web portal, Howard can monitor the company’s trucks in real time to get up-to-date information and find the nearest Kenworth dealers relative to its location. If the problem can’t wait until the truck returns to the company’s warehouse in San Francisco, particularly if the issue triggers activation of the truck engine protection system, Howard can quickly locate a nearby Kenworth dealer and direct the driver to it. The dealer’s service shop can immediately start the process of identifying potential issues and options before the truck arrives.

Once the truck arrives, the Kenworth Gold Certified dealer network location can provide Howard with an estimate of time to repair within two hours. Meanwhile, Hayes or others at NorCal Kenworth can monitor the situation and assist with any necessary follow-up with rental trucks, for example, or respond to any warranty coverage questions Howard may have later.

“Kenworth TruckTech+ Remote Diagnostics helps me guide drivers to a quick and often simple solution,” Howard said. “Recently we had a situation involving a driver who runs a Kenworth T680 from San Francisco to Durango (Colorado), then to Taos, Santa Fe and Albuquerque (New Mexico), before picking up backhaul loads in Nogales (Arizona), and returning to San Francisco. Using TruckTech+ Remote Diagnostics, I was able to work with the driver to resolve the situation, which involved the truck’s radiator, and get him back on the road.

Veritable Vegetable Kenworth T680

“If this would have happened to a truck without TruckTech+ Remote Diagnostics, it’s likely we would have had to find a mobile technician, ask the driver to take a chance and drive it to the nearest KenworthPremierCare® Gold Certified dealer, or to play it safe, we might have had the truck towed there,” Howard added. “That’s because an unresolved radiator issue could easily lead to an engine de-rate and eventually damage the engine.

“If we have to stop and have the truck towed in for servicing immediately, depending on where the incident takes place, the towing bill alone could be about $2,000,” Howard said. “But that’s only the half of it. Then it all becomes this giant shell game because we deal with tightly scheduled pickup and deliveries of high-value and highly perishable organic produce. We may have to rent a truck and have it hooked to the loaded trailer so the driver can complete those deliveries if he’s not running up against hours-of-service compliance issues.

“Kenworth TruckTech+ helps us avoid all these hassles by allowing us to determine if there’s an easier fix or if the truck can be driven to a Kenworth dealership instead of having it towed in. That’s great for our company’s bottom line,” Howard said. “But perhaps most importantly, because TruckTech+ Service Management can help us avoid unplanned and extended service calls, we won’t get those delays in our deliveries that can damage our reputation of transporting perishable produce on time and without incident. A damaged reputation is not something you can easily fix.”

Metal Recycler's Fleet of Western Stars Keep Business Growing

July 26, 2018

POST AUTHOR:
COMMENTS:

OWEGO, N.Y. – (July 26, 2018) – Adam Weitsman never thought he’d get into the trucking business, but if he was going to do it, he was going to do it right.

That’s why his company, Upstate Shredding - Weitsman Recycling, now operates a fleet of 47 new Western Star 5700XEs and expects to have 63 of the trucks by the end of 2018.

Upstate Shredding is the largest privately-owned scrap metal processing and recycling operation in the East. Headquartered in the Southern Tier region of New York, it has 17 scrap recycling and processing operations in New York and Pennsylvania. Scrap metal is trucked from the yards to two shredding locations, one in Pennsylvania and one in New York. Once the metal is processed, it’s trucked out again to domestic steel mills or to ports for shipping overseas.

That’s a lot of deliveries that must be made on time.

An Upstate Recycling Western Star 5700XE

“We need to be able to service the customers exactly when they need to be serviced,” Weitsman said. “And the steel mills are counting on performance from us. They don’t want to hear, ‘the truck didn’t show up.’ They would say, ‘That’s no problem, we’ll just find someone else.’ They’ll replace us.”

Upstate had been using local small trucking firms, but they proved unable to keep up with company demand, which was limiting growth. Upstate Shredding - Weitsman Recycling also bought a large number of dump trailers and leased them for $1 a year to owner-operators, but there were still gaps in service that needed to be filled.

“We would stymie our own growth. We couldn’t really grow anymore,” Weitsman said. “We had to do it ourselves to guarantee the service to our customers and to guarantee outbound shipments from our 17 facilities.”

So, he started his own fleet. After experimenting with other trucks, he decided that the Western Star 5700XE was the ideal combination of efficiency, performance and ruggedness.

The 2018 and 2019 Western Star trucks are now running between the company’s 17 locations, hauling the company’s large round-body dump trailers.

Upstate chose the 5700XEs in consultation with Tracey Road Equipment, a Western Star and construction equipment dealer with seven locations in New York State.

“It’s always a little scary to switch truck makes, but we’ve been working with Tracey Road for 12 years and they’ve always provided great equipment and great advice,” Weitsman said. “Having that many locations helps and they’ve always treated us the way we want to be treated.”

An Upstate Recycling Western Star 5700XE

The 5700XEs have Detroit™ DD16® engines with Eaton Fuller transmissions, 13,300-lb front axles and 46,000-lb rear axles.

“We took the time to truly understand Upstate’s business and trucking needs, so we were able to outfit him with the ideal truck for the job, which turned out to be the 5700XE,” said Scott Collins, Vice President of Sales for Tracey Road.

Weitsman also wanted the trucks to look good on the job because it reflects well on the company. The day cabs are fiery red with black hoods and premium interiors. A sharp, smooth-riding truck is key to attracting drivers in a tight labor market, he said.

“We’re getting more drivers and better drivers because the trucks are good looking and dependable,” Weitsman said. “If they feel good about what they drive they’re going to be happier and more productive.”

The 5700XEs have performed well and improved uptime, he said. “Our customer service has been better and, in the end, we’ve been more profitable because of it,” he said.

Bandit Big Rigs return to Hickory Motor Speedway August 11th

July 26, 2018

POST AUTHOR:
COMMENTS:

(Newton, NC July 26, 2018) – Ricky Rude has had success at Hickory Motor Speedway before. Now he's hoping to extend his points lead when the Minimizer Bandit Big Rig Series returns to Hickory Saturday, August 11th .

The Bandits were supposed to run on the World's Most Famous Short Track back in April, but Mother Nature had other ideas.

"This is going to be an awesome event," Bandit General Manager Jason Johnson said. "The fans at Hickory are some of the absolute best, and I expect the Bandits will put on a heck of a show for them!"

Rude (#14) sits atop the standings, but several Bandits are close behind, including Mark Noble (#74), Tyler Kruckeberg (#54) and Allen Boles (#3).

Rude's #14 truck stole the checkered flag at Hickory last October, giving Rude a huge win on his way to the first-ever Bandit points title.

Will history repeat itself in 2018?

"I'm feeling good right now," Rude said. "I've got a truck that's in good shape, so we'll see what happens."

The Bandits line up in front of a sold out crowd at Hickory Motor Speedway in October 2017

Fans have sold out Hickory Motor Speedway the last couple times the Bandits have come calling. Organizers expect more of the same this time around.

"North Carolina fans love their big rig racing and we love coming to Hickory Motor Speedway," Johnson said. "It never hurts to have some local favorites with you!"

Jupiter Motorsports is located in Weaverville, North Carolina, approximately 90 miles from the World's Most Famous Short Track. Jupiter Bandits include Boles, Justin Ball (#17) and Marshall Davis (#41).

Rude and Darren Proffitt (#27) also hail from Weaverville.

In addition to the Bandit races, fans can expect several other activities that day, including a Bandit Party in the pits.

"We'll have a DJ and live music, but it's limited to a certain number of tickets, so fans will want to purchase a Pit Party Pass as soon as possible," Johnson said.

There will also be bounce houses for the kids, several vendors on hand, as well as the Minimizer Fan Series Truck Show.

Fans can purchase tickets online, as well as register their truck for the Fan Series Truck Show.

Kenworth and Army Veteran Support Careers in Trucking

July 24, 2018

POST AUTHOR:
COMMENTS:

PENSACOLA, Fla., July 24, 2018 – Service personnel and their spouses participated in career development programs and learned more about post-military career opportunities at Hiring Our Heroes Transition Summits recently hosted by Naval Air Station Pensacola and Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. The two summits, coordinated by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring Our Heroes Program, concluded with interactive panel discussions and a hiring fair.

Kenworth is teaming up with the FASTPORT Trucking Track Mentoring Program and the Hiring our Heroes Program to find America’s top rookie military veteran who has successfully transitioned from active duty to driving trucks. For the third consecutive year, Kenworth is donating a T680 equipped with a 76-inch sleeper and PACCAR MX-13 engine to serve as the “Transition Trucking – Driving for Excellence” award.

At the hiring fairs, transitioning service personnel got a close look at a Kenworth T680, which will continue to be displayed at future hiring summits to encourage transitioning service members to explore trucking industry opportunities.

“Our participation in these events provides trucking industry outreach to help military personnel explore and consider their career opportunities available upon their departure from military service,” said Kurt Swihart, Kenworth marketing director. “Employers in our industry can benefit from the skills offered by these highly trained professionals who have served our country.”

U.S. Army veteran Drew Bennett, Kenworth’s Southeast region fleet sales manager, served as Kenworth’s ambassador at both the Naval Air Station Pensacola and Eglin Air Force Base events. Bennett enlisted in the U.S. Army following the attacks on September 11, 2001. He served as a light-wheeled vehicle mechanic in Special Operations and completed three combat deployments during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

“Towards the end of my enlistment obligation, I was faced with the difficult decision – re-enlist or receive an honorable discharge and pursue my college degree. I chose to attend Illinois State University (ISU) and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing in 2010,” said Bennett. “Transitioning from the structure of military life to the freedoms of civilian life, paired with the effects of combat service, proved difficult. I was fortunate to live with five U.S. Army Rangers – who also attended ISU – which allowed me to maintain that bond while adjusting to life outside the Army.”

In his senior year, Bennett attended a career fair where he learned about a 2-year leadership development program in the trucking industry and interviewed for the position. “I believe my military experience, combined with my business degree, set me apart from the other candidates. More recently, I found my home at Kenworth in my current position, he said.

“I’m proud to work for Kenworth, a company that partners with programs such as Hiring Our Heroes, and makes a big investment in supporting veterans and their families. It was rewarding to meet with those servicemen and servicewomen at Naval Air Station Pensacola and Eglin Air Force Base, and show them the industry leading benefits of the Kenworth T680, while also offering my counsel and advice from my own experience in making the transition from a military to a civilian career,” said Bennett, who made 10-minute presentations on those topics at both Hiring Our Heroes events.

COMMENTS:

GREENSBORO, NC (July 24, 2018) – Mack Trucks today released the third episode of its RoadLife series, “New Blood,” on roadlife.tv and Amazon Prime Video. Featuring Bubba Wallace, the rookie driver for the iconic Richard Petty Motorsports 43 car, NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard Petty and veteran drivers who deliver the critical gear needed for each race, the episode focuses on the extreme coordination required to keep NASCAR racing.

“The thing about racing is that it’s not just a driver, it’s not just a racecar, it’s not just a pit crew,” said Petty, who also owns the number 43 team. “It’s takes a combination of people and organization to pull the program together.”

Tony Fripp, one of NASCAR’s hauler drivers, transports the television production equipment required to broadcast each of the 36 races during the season. He works closely with his colleagues to make sure everything is ready to go.

“When the race ends, we’ll go in and tear down all the caution lights and inspection equipment for the NASCAR technology trailer, then we’ll begin teardown on the things that go into the trailer I haul,” Fripp said. “It’s just a tight bond. We’re always together: on the road, eating, rooming.”

Jeff “Cowboy” Icenhour drives the 43 team hauler from track to track, making sure the most important race equipment – the race car – is on time. It’s a responsibility he takes seriously.

“There’s lots of truck drivers, but there’s only 43 of us,” Icenhour said. “It’s something I take pride in, and I do my best to represent the company well when I’m on the road.”

Mack Trucks released “New Blood,” the third episode of its RoadLife series on roadlife.tv and Amazon Prime Video.

CHARLOTTE - (July 23, 2018) - Charlotte has been selected to receive the Freightliner Trucks Hardest Working Cities award, which honors cities fueling economic growth and job creation. The recognition program by Freightliner came after an economic data review revealed the Queen City is one of the top cities in North America for investments in infrastructure, building projects, and job creation.

As part of the Charlotte recognition, a formal award presentation will be held on Monday, Sept. 17, at 11:00 a.m. at zMAX Dragway. The award will be accepted by City Council member and chair of Economic Development committee, James Mitchell, Jr., on behalf of the city of Charlotte. After the award presentation, lunch will be served by local food trucks and there will be Freightliner vocational trucks on site for ride and drives on both urban and dirt tracks.

An example of the 2017 Freightliner Trucks Hardest Working Cities Award

“The Hardest Working Cities program has been a great way to shine light on positive growth in cities across North America, and the men and women who work tirelessly behind the scenes,” said Mike McHorse, director of channel marketing, Freightliner and Detroit. “It’s clear cities count on work trucks, and the drivers who operate them, for essential jobs such as building mass transit solutions, hauling refuse, delivering essential goods, and paving roadways, so we’re honored to recognize these successful economies.”

In addition to the award presentation on Sept. 17, Freightliner will coordinate recognition events, including gift and food deliveries, at work sites around the city to thank workers for their contributions. Previous work site visits have included major road construction projects, public works garages, landfills, and more. Freightliner has recognized 11 cities to date, visiting more than 25 work sites and thanking more than 1,000 workers across North America.

To select the Freightliner Trucks Hardest Working Cities, approximately 400 metropolitan census areas in the United States and Canada were reviewed in 11 data categories including impact on overall gross domestic product (GDP), growth in employment, and number of jobs in key industry sectors including construction, manufacturing, and logistics. As a contributor to job creation, Freightliner Trucks currently employs more than 8,000 people across the Carolinas.

Charlotte is among:

  • The top 10 cities for growth in total employment
  • The top 15 cities for percentage of contribution to U.S. GDP
  • The top 5 percent of cities for heavy/tractor trailer truck drivers and light truck/delivery drivers
  • The top 10 percent of cities for construction employment

“Charlotte’s economy has seen significant growth over the years and continues to attract more people and more jobs,” said Terry Keith, vocational sales manager, Excel Truck Group. “It’s an honor for Charlotte to be recognized as one of the hardest working cities in North America. The city is a great place to live and everywhere you look there’s a new building going up or a road construction project in motion, so this award really makes sense.”

Since the launch of the program in 2015, 11 cities across North America have been awarded the title: Dallas, Des Moines, Detroit, Edmonton, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Nashville, New York City, Salt Lake City, Seattle/Tacoma, and Toronto.

FONTANA, CA (July 19, 2018) – Mack Trucks today expanded the availability of a pre-wire option for equipment from Lytx – the global leader in video telematics – to the Mack® Granite® model. Mack made the announcement during a ride and drive event featuring Lytx DriveCam•-equipped Mack models in Fontana, California.

“Expanding the Lytx offer to our Granite model means customers with on- and off-road vocational applications have access to the latest safety solutions,” said David Pardue, vice president of connected vehicles and uptime services for Mack Trucks. “Whether being used to help drivers become more efficient, or helping prove a driver’s innocence in an accident, the Lytx video-based safety program delivers great value to customers.”

The expanded collaboration with Lytx builds on a memorandum of understanding Mack and Lytx entered in October 2017.

“Mack continues to be a tremendous partner in enabling our ultimate shared goal of keeping drivers safe while delivering tangible value to fleet operations,” said Eliot Feldstein, Lytx’s senior vice president of strategy and corporate development. “With Mack now expanding the pre-wire of Lytx solutions to its Granite models – the number one-selling Class 8 heavy-duty conventional straight truck model in the U.S. – even more customers will experience the benefits of our programs faster and with best-in-class workmanship. Mack Granite

Available in axle forward or axle back models, the rugged Mack Granite model – the No. 1 Class 8 conventional straight truck model in the U.S. for 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 – can be spec’d for a wide variety of construction jobs, including dump and concrete mixer applications. Granite models are equally at home in the demanding refuse segment as rear-loaders or roll-offs. Municipal customers depend on Granite models for plow applications. Groendyke Transport Values its Kenworth T680s

ENID, Okla., July 18, 2018 – Brian Gigoux and other executives at Groendyke Transport knew they would be making a bold move when they reduced the company’s trade-in cycle for its trucks from nine years to five.

But the need to bring on trucks with the newest and latest technologies to enhance driver safety and fuel economy, reduce costs at its maintenance facilities, and attract and retain the industry’s safest drivers compelled the company to take that step.

“Safety, driver comfort, and driver productivity are our top motivations when developing new truck specs,” said Gigoux, Groendyke vice president of equipment and maintenance. “Safe and comfortable drivers are naturally more productive.” The tank truck carrier also has a solid-gold reputation to uphold in the industry from earning seven outstanding safety performance trophies from the National Tank Truck Carriers.

The key question faced by Groendyke’s executives was: Which truck manufacturer could deliver the highest level of driver comfort, along with the company’s must-have safety equipment, industry leading residual values and reduced operating costs at the end of those five years? After all, a decade later, trucks now cost a lot more than the ones they would replace, Gigoux said. One OEM high on their list was Kenworth, with its on-highway flagship model – the Kenworth T680 in day cab and 76-inch mid-roof sleeper configurations.

“Our average driver has a long tenure with our company and many have driven over a million miles for us alone,” he said. “Keeping these men and women safe is our obligation. Driver acceptance is influenced by a truck that proves to be reliable and allows them to start each trip with confidence that they’ll be able to safely deliver their load on time.”

As the fifth largest motor carrier of bulk commodities serving North America, Groendyke hauls 450,000 loads of chemicals, refined fuels, asphalt components and lubrication oils about 77 million miles annually with a fleet of 900 tractors and 1,400 trailers. Gigoux said the company’s wide distribution network, with 30 terminals spanning across the center of the United States and runs to 49 states and Canada, required a truck manufacturer with a solid dealer network. And since nearly every terminal maintains a full-service maintenance facility, the OEM’s replacement parts support had to be equally up to the fleet’s challenging needs. Not only did Groendyke require an OEM with dealers that could supply captive and proprietary replacement parts to its maintenance facilities, but also fulfill the facilities’ long-term sourcing needs for a higher volume of quality “all-makes” aftermarket parts than the typical fleet.

“We looked at some options. Based on our experience with the Kenworth T800 equipped with earlier versions of the PACCAR MX engine, and our visit to the Kenworth plant in Chillicothe (Ohio), we chose Kenworth and the T680,” Gigoux said. Meeting Groendyke’s safety equipment needs was the price of entry for all of the OEMs. The Kenworth T680 met that need by offering the Bendix® ABS-6 Advanced with ESP® Stability System, Bendix® Wingman® Fusion™ electronic stability program and collision mitigation technology, Bendix ADB22X air disc brakes in all positions, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Groendyke executives’ visits to the Chillicothe plant, and later stops at both the Kenworth plant and PACCAR Parts distribution center in Renton, Washington, helped cinch the deal.

These visits, the T680’s driver productivity-enhancing amenities, and the dynamic parts distribution network – with highly efficient distribution warehouses strategically located across the country – provided by MHC Kenworth and its partner, PACCAR Parts, offered an unbeatable combination, Gigoux said.

“I’ve been to many truck manufacturing plants over the last 25 years,” Gigoux said. “It was clear to me everyone’s focus on quality on the production line and the Chillicothe plant’s cleanliness was top-shelf. It was an eye-opening experience to talk with the engineers who designed the T680, and the people who build them. When we discussed our company’s needs and concerns for future developments, we were impressed that, in nearly every case, Kenworth’s engineers were already working on T680 refinements and had answers to our questions.”

Following the executives’ tour of the Chillicothe plant, Groendyke began buying Kenworth T680s with day cabs, which are used for local deliveries, and with 76-inch mid-roof sleepers, which are used on longer hauls that move raw products across the United States and into Canada.

Gigoux said an early indication that Groendyke’s executives had made the right choice came about last year, after PACCAR introduced its integrated powertrain. The PACCAR Powertrain, which features a 455-hp PACCAR MX-13 engine, 12-speed PACCAR automated transmission with 1,650 lb-ft of torque and proprietary PACCAR 40K tandem rear axle, gives Groendyke a 2/10 of a mile per gallon improvement in fuel economy over a similarly equipped Kenworth T680, Gigoux noted. With the company’s trucks averaging about 100,000 miles annually, and a current price of $3.17 per gallon for diesel fuel, Groendyke stands to save about $7,000 per truck over a five-year period, he said.

“We’ve been purchasing the PACCAR MX-13 engine with Kenworth models since it was first introduced in the North American market in 2010,” Gigoux said. “The engine has always pulled strong, but got even better with the release of the integrated PACCAR Powertrain with 2017 greenhouse gas emission-compliant MX-13 engines with peak torque lowered to 900 rpm. The new 12-speed PACCAR transmission complements the PACCAR MX-13 very well, and the lower first gear ratio has allowed us to incrementally lower the rear axle ratio to slow the engine down at highway speeds for optimum fuel economy.”

Gigoux said in the past, concerns over how such adjustments might impact the truck’s performance, particularly on routes with mountain grades, have kept the company from taking such bold steps with downspeeding to attain optimum fuel economy. The PACCAR 40K rear axle changed that perception, he added.

“The new PACCAR rear axles are offered with numerous ratio options that have allowed us to really get ‘dialed in’ on our engine speed at top cruising speeds, so we can now work with MHC Kenworth to adjust those ratios appropriately on trucks based on the type of terrain on which they operate,” he said. “The new rear axles are also lighter weight with some unique fuel savings features such as laser-welded gear sets to reduce oil churn.”

Groendyke is so pleased with the results that the company plans to buy 50 more Kenworth T680s with the integrated PACCAR Powertrain and place them into service by the end of the calendar year, bringing the company’s total count of Kenworth T680s to 185.

“The fact that we have been averaging more than 7 mpg* with the Kenworth T680 with the integrated PACCAR Powertrain certainly makes us happy,” Gigoux added. “But we’re always looking for more. The fact that MHC Kenworth and the engineers at Kenworth work with us to continuously refine our truck specification choices to attain better fuel economy without impacting performance certainly makes us happier.”
